How does the Fraxel treatment work?
Fraxel is the original fractional laser treatment that works below the skin’s surface from the top down. Fraxel light energy stimulates your skin’s natural collagen, rejuvenating skin cells below the surface to help smooth the creases and pockets that cause wrinkles and scars. Fraxel only treats targeted problem areas – so the results are focused and effective.
What areas does Fraxel treat?
Fraxel laser treatments are usually done on the face, neck, chest area, and hands, but it can be used most anywhere on the skin where a scar or sun damage appears.
Can Fraxel Treat Scars or Stretchmarks?
Absolutely. Acne scars are best treated using the Fraxel Restore treatment to resurface the skin and restore healthy cells from the damaged tissue. Five treatments are recommended, spaced about 1 month apart. The treatment takes about 35 minutes and requires an additional 45 minutes pre-treatment for application of topical anesthetic. There is minimal downtime, which is some redness and swelling, that can last 2-3 days.
Stretchmarks are another common problem for women and men that can occur with pregnancy, or weight fluctuation. Stretch marks can also be treated using the Fraxel Restore system. Five treatments are recommended, spaced about 1 month apart. The treatment takes about 45 minutes depending on the area and requires an additional 45 minutes pre-treatment for application of topical anesthetic. There is minimal downtime, which is some redness and swelling that can last 2-3 days.
What is the difference between Fraxel Restore and Fraxel Repair?
Fraxel re:store is a non-ablative skin resurfacing treatment that produces significant results for mild to moderately damaged skin. The recommended protocol is a series of 5 consecutive treatments, given at 4-week intervals over the course of 5-6 months.
Fraxel re:pair is a more intensive treatment than Fraxel re:store. It is best for moderate to severe sun damage or scarring. It is often done on the face, as well as the neck and chest. Fraxel Repair usually only requires a single treatment, although 2 treatments may be necessary for best results in patients with more severe skin conditions.
How long do the results of Fraxel last?
Improvements are long lasting, but since the aging process continues, maintenance treatments are strongly recommended. You can prevent dark spots from returning by wearing sun block while outdoors. Fine lines and rough skin may return to some degree in about six months; however, this usually only occurs when patients do not maintain the prescribed post-treatment skin care regimen at home.
What happens during a Fraxel treatment?
We apply a topical anesthetic which will take 45-60 minutes to take effect. For Fraxel re:pair treatment, we may also administer an oral sedative to help you relax and remain comfortable during your procedure. The laser device is then passed over the areas you wish to be treated, and this process generally takes 15-45 minutes, depending on the treatment area. You will feel a mild to moderate stinging or burning sensation during treatment. Patients usually do not experience any discomfort once the actual treatment is complete.
Can I return to work immediately after Fraxel treatments?
Some patients take 1-2 days off from work after Fraxel re:store treatments due to mild skin redness, but there is no functional downtime. Many patients go back to work the next day, sometimes with the aid of makeup to minimize the appearance of redness, or simply work from home.
Most patients take a week off from work after Fraxel re:pair treatment due to the need for specific post-procedure topical care, as well as skin redness during that time, but again, there is no functional downtime. Patients are still able to work from home starting the next day after treatment and may return to the office when they are comfortable.
