Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

RS1114_shutterstock_249018001Trying to flatten your stomach through diet and exercise alone can be frustrating. No matter what you do, the extra fat and lax skin just won’t go away. A Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) targets the fat, loose skin, and stretched muscles of the abdomen so that you can finally have a flat stomach. *Results and patient experience may vary

Abdominoplasty with Dr. Munasifi addresses 3 components of abdominal wall deformity to create a smoother and firmer abdomen: (1) loose or wrinkly skin and stretch marks, usually as a result of aging, pregnancy, or significant weight loss; (2) fatty tissue, and (3) muscle weakness and/or separation, which often occurs after pregnancy.

Dr. Munasifi has a host of techniques available to him, and he will choose the ones that are best for your anatomy and the results you want. His training and years of experience allow him to apply both science and art to your surgery. Your friends and family will simply say, “Did you lose weight? You look great!”

What areas does a Tummy Tuck treat?

A Tummy Tuck with Dr. Munasifi can flatten the abdomen and slim love handles. It also improves muscle separation, stretching, or weakness in the abdomen*.

How long does a Tummy Tuck last?

Dr. Munasifi’s Tummy Tuck techniques are long-lasting, but fat and lax skin can recur in the abdominal area. The best way to help your results last longer is to maintain a steady weight.

While women can safely become pregnant again after a Tummy Tuck, we recommend that you wait until you are finished having children before you have this surgery. Otherwise, some of the procedure’s results could be reversed.

What kind of anesthesia is required for a Tummy Tuck?

In most cases, general anesthesia is used, and a Tummy Tuck is usually an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day. Anesthesia is always provided by a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist.

You will need to have someone available to drive you home, however. Alternatively, we can provide a car service to bring you to your surgery appointment and take you home for a minimal fee, provided you have an adult to accompany you.

What happens during a Tummy Tuck?

The procedure takes 2-4 hours. An incision is made from hip to hip along the lower pubic area (easily hidden by a bikini bottom). The loose skin is lifted off of the abdominal wall, exposing the vertical abdominal muscles, which are stitched into a new position to tighten the muscles. Next, excess skin is stretched and removed. The remaining skin is redraped over the abdominal area and sutured in place. The belly button is reattached proportionally to the new, flatter stomach area.

If necessary, Liposuction is also performed to remove fatty tissue. In this case, a small tube called a cannula is inserted into the incisions and attached to a suction device, which removes precise amounts of fat.

After surgery, dressings are applied to your incision sites, and you will be wrapped with compression garments. Small, thin tubes will also be temporarily placed to drain any excess blood or fluids that may accumulate. After some time in our recovery room, you will be able to go home.

What is a Mini-Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive approach with a smaller incision, best suited for those who have only a limited amount of loose skin or stretch marks in the lower abdomen or above the pubic bone. This approach does not typically involve tightening of the abdominal muscles, but it can also be combined with Liposuction for a more defined result.

A Mini-Tummy Tuck is performed in our outpatient office facility under local anesthesia and sedation, and it takes approximately 2 hours.

When can I return to work after a Tummy Tuck?

Most of our patients are able to leave the house the day after their procedure. Many of our patients begin working from home within 4-5 days and return to the office within 1-2 weeks*. If your work is strenuous or involves lifting, you may need 3-6 weeks off depending upon the extent of your Tummy Tuck.

What is recovery like after a Tummy Tuck?

Dr. Munasifi is very particular about patient care after procedures, so he will meet with you multiple times throughout the recovery process to monitor your healing. All surgical follow-up appointments are provided free of charge, as he wants you to feel comfortable with bringing up any concerns or questions you have.

After about 4-5 days, the bandages and drains are removed, and the sutures are removed in 1-2 weeks. It’s normal to experience some soreness, bruising, tightness, numbness, itching, and swelling for 2-3 weeks. We will give you a prescription for pain medication, but many patients find that non-prescription painkillers such as Tylenol are enough.

Since strenuous activity can increase blood pressure, it’s very important to avoid heavy exercise for about 6 weeks. However, being completely inactive is one of the worst things you can do after a procedure. Dr. Munasifi encourages patients to take regular walks beginning the day after surgery. You should be able to resume light exercise after about 4 weeks.

Scars are hidden within the lower groin where they cannot be seen, and they will become less noticeable after enough time has passed for them to mature. We will also give you strategies to help the scars heal faster and better.

Although you should be able to appreciate your new slimmer profile in just a couple weeks, it may take up to 6 months to see the optimal results.

Rest assured that we will give you detailed instructions for your recovery, and we will be available to answer your questions and monitor your progress during follow-up examinations. Dr. Munasifi believes in providing the attention you need to feel comfortable about your procedure, and he loves getting to know his patients.
