If you suffer with breasts that are heavy or pendulous, you probably deal with skin irritation, as well as pain in the back, shoulders, and neck. Some women even endure skeletal deformities and breathing problems as a result. A Breast Reduction can relieve all of these symptoms, making the breasts smaller, lighter, rounder, and more symmetrical.
During a Breast Reduction, Dr. Munasifi removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce and reshape the breasts. The areolas (the darker skin surrounding the nipples) are often reduced and reshaped as well to better match the new breast size.
Women who have had a Breast Reduction report less self-consciousness, better-fitting clothes, and a more proportionate figure.
How long does a Breast Reduction last?
The results from Breast Reduction are long lasting, although sagging of breast tissue can occur due to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss.
What kind of anesthesia is required for Breast Reduction?
Breast Reduction is done using general anesthesia and is an outpatient surgery, which means you can go home the same day. Anesthesia is always provided by a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist.
You will need to have someone available to drive you home, however. Alternatively, we can provide a car service to bring you to your surgery appointment and take you home for a minimal fee, provided you have an adult to accompany you.
What happens during a Breast Reduction?
The procedure takes 3-4 hours. Incisions vary, but in most cases, an anchor shape is used. This involves an incision around the areola, vertically from the bottom of the areola to the bottom of the breast, and horizontally under the breast following its natural curve. In some cases, the horizontal incision under the breast can be omitted, which involves a “lollipop” shaped incision.
Dr. Munasifi then removes glandular tissue, fat, and skin. The areolas and nipples are lifted to a new position, and the areolas are resized and reshaped, if necessary. The skin from both sides of the breast is then brought down and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast.
The incisions are sutured, and we will wrap you in a compression bandage. After some time spent in our recovery room, you may go home.
When can I return to work after Breast Reduction?
All of our patients are able to leave the house the day after their procedure. Many of our patients begin working from home within 4-5 days. We suggest allowing a 2-week recovery period after Breast Reduction before returning to office work. If you have a strenuous job, you may need additional time off.
What is recovery like after a Breast Reduction?
Dr. Munasifi is very particular about patient care after procedures, so he will meet with you multiple times throughout the recovery process to monitor your healing. All surgical follow-up appointments are provided free of charge, as he wants you to feel comfortable with bringing up any concerns or questions you have.
Small drains are placed in each breast to capture post-surgical fluids. These are removed in a few days. The bandages are removed about 2-3 days after surgery, and the sutures are removed in 1-2 weeks. We will provide a surgical bra for you to wear for a few weeks until the swelling and bruising subside. You will need to sleep on your back for a few weeks.
It’s normal to experience some soreness, bruising, tightness, numbness, itching, and swelling. We will give you a prescription for pain medication, but many patients find that non-prescription painkillers such as Tylenol are enough.
Since strenuous activity can increase blood pressure, it’s very important to avoid heavy exercise or lifting for about 6 weeks. However, being completely inactive is one of the worst things you can do after a procedure. Dr. Munasifi encourages patients to take regular long walks beginning the day after surgery. You should be able to resume light exercise after about 4 weeks.
Scars are less noticeable after enough time has passed for them to mature. We will also give you strategies to help the scars heal faster and better.
Rest assured that we will give you detailed instructions for your recovery, and we will be available to answer your questions and monitor your progress during follow-up examinations. Dr. Munasifi believes in providing the attention you need to feel comfortable about your procedure, and he loves getting to know his patients.
