Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

The nose is a prominent feature. A crooked, misshapen, or large nose can alter the beauty of the entire face. It’s why Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is one of the more popular aesthetic procedures in Arlington.  It can be life-changing to finally balance your facial features, improve your self-esteem and increase your confidence.

The nose goes unnoticed unless it’s out of proportion. When facial symmetry is off, your nose will call attention to itself. If the nose distorts the balance of your face or has an abnormality of some kind, you can turn to rhinoplasty to restore facial harmony.

Many Arlington residents want to change the appearance of their nose. Dr. Talal Munasifi is an established expert in rhinoplasty and produces desired results while reducing risks. He dedicates his practice to natural and proportional outcomes for his rhinoplasty patients in the greater Arlington area.

His unique training and experience as an aesthetic rhinoplasty surgeon make him one of the top surgeons in Arlington. Dr. Munasifi can correct cosmetic issues and fix functional breathing issues all the while maintaining the structure and function of the nose.

Various factors like height, age, skin thickness, ethnic background, and configuration of the forehead, eyes, and chin will determine the changes that Dr. Munasifi recommends.

Candidates for Rhinoplasty

It’s essential that our Arlington patients are done physically maturing before they undergo rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty should be accesible to men and women who are sixteen years or older. Although rhinoplasty is accessible to teenagers, all patients should have the emotional and physical maturity to handle a surgical procedure.

Realistic expectations are important. It is important to understand that rhinoplasty offers improvement, not perfection; nor can it give you the nose of another person. Dr. Munasifi will explain these facts during your consultation for rhinoplasty.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty in Arlington are:

  • 16 years or older
  • Done in terms of facial growth
  • Are in good health

  • Have realistic expectations

What to Expect During Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that will be performed at the Advanced Plastic Surgery Center’s AAAASF fully accredited Surgical Suite. Rhinoplasty is done under general anesthesia provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Munasifi will use either a closed rhinoplasty or open rhinoplasty procedure, depending on your customized surgical plan.

When Dr. Munasifi performs surgery from the inside of the nostrils, it is a closed rhinoplasty. When he performs it with a minor incision to the columella below the tip of the nose, it is an open rhinoplasty. With time, the tiny incision will become inconspicuous. With a nose suffering from deformity or one that needs revision surgery, Dr. Munasifi will choose an open rhinoplasty approach. Dr. Munasifi will advise you on the technique and the entire surgical plan before your surgery.

Breaking the nose is an antiquated method and not practiced at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center. Instead, Dr. Munasifi makes an incision into the nasal bones for repositioning. He feels this method gives him better control of the operation and reduces the physical stress to the patient’s tissues. At times incisions into the bone are needed to narrow the nose or reconfigure the nasal structure after removing the hump.

Bone and cartilage may be cut away from the bridge of the nose to remove unsightly humps. Dr. Munasifi is careful not to remove too much because it could damage the nasal structure or create an unnatural appearance. When the structures of the nose are too large, removing excess bone and cartilage is necessary.

Dr. Munasifi often performs Septoplasty in concert with rhinoplasty. This procedure includes removing the mucous membrane lining from the cartilaginous and bony septum. The deviated (crooked) portions are identified and removed with care to preserve an adequate amount of nasal support and structure.

The mucous membranes are then replaced and sutured together, eliminating the need for deep nasal packing. For our patients in Arlington, this means the recovery is much more comfortable than a traditional rhinoplasty.

When the nose needs to be larger or needs to have additional support, a common rhinoplasty technique known as cartilage grafting will be used. Dr. Munasifi can graft the cartilage from the septum, other parts inside of the nose, the ribs, or from the ear. When cartilage is needed for your rhinoplasty, Dr. Munasifi will consult with you to find the right place to get the graft. Your ear will not look different after surgery, and any resulting scar that forms is hidden. This practice is often used to support the tip, open the airway, strengthen the nostrils, or build up the bridge of the nose.

If it is necessary to reduce flared or wide nostrils, Dr. Munasifi will make an incision along the crease where the side of the nostril meets the upper lip and cheek. Because it’s hidden away, the incision will become inconspicuous once it heals.

Recovery for Rhinoplasty

After your rhinoplasty, a lightweight external splint is applied to maintain the new shape of your nose and protect the nasal bones. Internal nasal splints may be inserted to protect the septum. We will remove either type of splint within a week.

Dr. Munasifi is very particular about patient care post-surgery, so he will meet with you multiple times throughout the recovery process to monitor your healing. We provide follow-up appointments free of charge, so feel comfortable with bringing up any concerns or questions you have.

We will remove any external sutures after four to five days.  After we remove the splints, many patients feel comfortable going out in public. You can wear makeup to cover any visible bruising. The majority of the bruising and swelling subsides in two to three weeks. It’s normal to experience some soreness, bruising, tightness, numbness, itching, and swelling. We will prescribe pain medication, but many patients prefer over-the-counter pain blocks such as Tylenol.

You should keep your head elevated at all times in the initial days of recovery to help reduce swelling. You will also need to sleep on your back for the recovery period to aid healing.

Since strenuous activity can increase blood pressure, it’s very important to avoid heavy exercise for six weeks. However, being completely inactive is one of the worst things you can do after a rhinoplasty. Dr. Munasifi encourages patients to take regular walks beginning the day after surgery. You should be able to resume light exercise after two weeks.

The scar from open rhinoplasty that’s hidden on the underside of the nose should heal rather quickly. If you feel the scar is too visible initially, you can use makeup to cover it up. We will also give you remedies to help the scar heal faster with less visibility. With a closed rhinoplasty, there will be no external scar at all.

We will give you detailed instructions for your recovery and will be available to answer your questions and monitor your progress during your follow-up visits.  The best benefit of nose surgery is that it’s permanent. Because it changes the structure of your nose, you will enjoy the results of nose surgery for the rest of your life.

What Procedures Complement Rhinoplasty?

Many patients have chin augmentation with rhinoplasty to create better facial harmony and proportion. Others have a Facelift and Rhinoplasty combination to address problems with the nose, as well as signs of aging. Rhinoplasty is also frequently combined with Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift) or a Brow/Forehead Lift to improve signs of aging around the eyes or eyebrows.

How Long Does Rhinoplasty Last?

Rhinoplasty results are long lasting. You will be able to enjoy a functional and aesthetic improvement of your nose for a very long time.

When Can I Return to Work After Rhinoplasty?

Most patients can leave the house the day after their rhinoplasty. Many of our patients begin working from home within four to five days. You will want to take a couple of weeks off from work if you don’t work at home. You will need additional time off if your work is strenuous. Dr. Munasifi will let you know how much time you need based on your surgical plan for the rhinoplasty.

“The staff was friendly and helpful during my visit. I was very nervous, but Dr. Munasifi made me feel comfortable. For the first time in years, I love looking in the mirror.” ~ Rhinoplasty in Arlington
