Eyelid Surgery Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery clinically referred to as blepharoplasty, is an operation to remove excess skin around your eyes. The team of expert cosmetic surgeons at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center offers eyelid surgery for both upper and lower lids.

For example, your surgeon can reduce loose skin on your upper eyelid that droops over your eye, or they can remove bulges of tissue from under your eyes. Eyelid surgery often has a subtle result that helps you look noticeably younger and more refreshed and awake.

Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

If you’re in good health but are unhappy about the appearance of loose skin around your eyes, eyelid surgery might be right for you. You should have realistic expectations about what eyelid surgery can achieve. For example, eyelid surgery can reduce the appearance of:

  • Extra skin that covers the natural fold of your upper eyelids
  • Loose skin that droops along the sides of your upper eyelids
  • Bags and dark circles under your eyes
  • Excess skin and wrinkles on your lower eyelids

The surgeons at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center provide comprehensive consultations to identify the best procedure to help you achieve your aesthetic goals and ensure that you’re a healthy and suitable candidate for the operation. Many patients combine eyelid surgery with a brow lift or facelift for a more dramatic change in their appearance.

What should I expect after eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure that only takes a couple of hours and is performed while you’re under general anesthesia. It may sometimes also be performed under local anesthesia in some patients.  After your sedation wears off, your surgeon reviews your aftercare instructions and releases you to go home and recover. The anesthesia leaves you drowsy, so make sure you have a friend or family member available to drive you home.

You can use cold compresses to reduce any swelling or bruising, and you may have some temporary tearing or dry eyes as you recover. You should also sleep in a sitting position for the first few nights to help minimize swelling.

Your surgeon can remove your stitches after 4-7 days. Most of the time, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs help reduce pain sufficiently. You should avoid wearing eye makeup for about a week and engaging in vigorous physical activity for six weeks.
